Vacation sketches, 5th of September, 2011.

Summer's almost gone. And again that sentence, in the beginning of yet another year, in expectation of yet another summer. As it was in the last yeat, this post will close one past time of sun, sea and sky. A year ago I did it with >> an image of a gull lifting off, and this year I do it with the sketches made during vacation. Each of these sketches summons in me a certain past time and place. Let us start with the scene that could be anywhere in the Adriatic: crithmum / samphire on a rock above the sea (drawing above). This is a different crithmum from the one I realized digitally >> in an earlier post.

This summer I read >> "The Overcoat" and other short stories by Gogol (The Overcoat is great, the rest is significantly weaker) and >> "Growth of the Soil" by Knut Hamsun. "Growth of the Soil" is a decent book, but nowhere near the value of Nobel Prize which Hamsun got for it. To me, Hamsun's >> "Hunger" is a much better novel, although it can be extremely irritating in places. In the drawing above, Goga is reading "Growth of the Soil".

Morning coffee and watching the day still warming up from the balcony. In the distance, one can see tiny houses, woods, mountain. Sea and the white tails of boats. In the glass of the balcony doors I see a reflection. Inspecting it, I note that the areas of darkness and lightness clearly separate in the reflection. This is ideal for a quick sketch (above).

Another morning, another coffee and another sketch.

And several times more. One must be swift because the light is changing quickly and its footprints disappear from where they were and appear somewhere else.

Bathing on the rocks across Valun on island of Cres. Although they are difficult to reach, there are still some who come. Parking lot in front of Valun is full, it is obviously popular around here. It will do for a day. In the shade of an umbrella I watch and sketch houses across (above).

And, in the end, another sketch of a reflection in the door glass (above). One hand across the balcony wall, and a pencil in the other one.
