Family (7th of April 2010)

The piece was originally called "Kate song" but when I again listened to it recently, I noted certain nostalgia that the tempo and the music suggest. As I listened to it, I saw the image of a family album whose pages are being turned by the flickering candle light. So, I tried to code something like that in PovRay. I am not entirely pleased with the result, the flickering candle flame could have been represented more realistically.

But, maybe more important than the 3D visualization of the music are the (2D) photographs that are the "raw material" for the video. The photos were approximately arranged by the date they were taken, so that the oldest photo comes first (see below). It it the photograph of the family of my grandfather's (Šiber) aunt from year 1905 that was, as far as I remember his story, taken somewhere around New York, USA.

The photo is interesting in many resepcts, but the figure of my grandfather's aunt is surely impressive.

It was difficult to choose photos for the video. So I decided to pick mostly older ones, which are perhaps more interesting from the present standpoint. The album goes all the way to me, but the older part is more emphasized, esspecially concerning the story around my grandfather Šiber. In certain places, I was thinking whether to include or not the photos of persons in military uniforms and I decided for the option, because uniforms and armies are part of the story and, also, part of the history that at least scratches every family. It is about people that were photographed with the idea of sending the photos to their families. And the idea I had is exactly about family.

I can tell a whole story about every photo, but this is of no importance to the video. All family albums are alike in a way: They are about people that are directly related to the one who keeps the album and sometimes browses through it. Those people pass through the pages of the album and they get older as the pages come to the end. Many of them are no longer living, and the one who turns the pages is also not a kid anymore. That is what the music is about, that is what the video is about.
