The description of >> Comploids 2013 conference says:

"The aim of the conference is to review the recent experimental, theoretical, and applied research in the physics of colloids. In addition, we would also like to emphasize the importance of colloids in other fields of science and in technology."

The conference will take place in Ljubljana from 14th to 18th of May, 2013, and one of the members of Local Organizing Committee is >> Primož Ziherl. Of course, he is my "link" to the conference. Primož entrusted me with the graphical design for the conference that would be used on the conference web pages, and perhaps even for printing on "real" objects. I will perhaps write a few words about it later, if and when it gets realized.

The proposition which Primož liked the most is shown in the image above, and the design was excellently incorporated in the web pages by Miha Ravnik. >> Click HERE to see how it looks like.

When I made the graphics for the conference, I concentrated on the three-dimensional modification of the logo of >> COMPLOIDS Marie Curie Initial Training Network, shown in the image below.

comploids, original logo

I constructed the logo as a union of 3D objects which resemble a crescent moon. The crescents were obtained as a geometrical difference of two cylinders with different radii. They were assembled in a particular mutual three-dimensional relation, so that they are entangled, lying on each other, making in such a way a harmonious three-part logo (the image below).

The crescent surfaces were "roughened", and the maps for their height fields (height_field >> PovRay object) were constructed on the basis of images published in papers authored by the members of Comploids network. Those three maps/textures also became a piece of the design and they appear as small, differently colored squares (the image below).

The three-dimensional version of logo was used as a basic element of the design, and everything else was adapted to it: font, the ordering of elements and colors. The first version I proposed is shown in the image above. Crescent-like elements appear also as the borders of circles in the background.

In the second version (below), the logo was "cleaned up", so that it does not overlap with other elements of the design - it pops out of the page. The links to other objects were achieved by thin connecting lines.

When you are assembling the design, you always have to reserve the place for the text and write something there in order to see how the font and the overall size reserved for the text fit in the design. This is where a famous >> Lorem ipsum thing comes from. Instead of Lorem ipsum, I used all sorts of things: nonsense, small pieces of Dylan's and Cohen's songs, and even a poem I wrote while I was a student - sorry it is impossible to translate it to English, but if you speak Croatian, take a look at the >> Croatian version of this page, there you will find it.

The third proposal was designed so that its width is larger than height (above). This is the proposal I like the least today. Its "Lorem ipsum" is the beginning of Cohen's "Suzanne".

And finally, the fourth proposal, which Primož liked the most (above) and which was realized with the black background in the end, as is shown in the image which opened this post.
